Accessibility

The short version

  • We want every member and visitor to be able to use this site comfortably.
  • You can make any page's text bigger: see the tips below.
  • If anything is hard to use, tell us and we will help, by email, phone, or paper.

Our commitment

Effective date: [Month Day, Year]

SIR San Mateo, Branch One of Sons In Retirement, Inc., wants every member and visitor to be able to use sirsanmateo.com (the "Site"), including people who have difficulty seeing, hearing, using a mouse, or reading small text. Many of our members are in their 70s, 80s, and 90s, so ease of use matters to us.

We aim to follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, the widely used international standard for accessible websites.

What we do

  • Use clear headings and plain language so pages are easy to scan and understand.
  • Use large, easy-to-read text on our own pages.
  • Add text descriptions (alt text) to meaningful photos so screen readers can describe them.
  • Choose text and background colors with strong contrast, and avoid using color alone to convey information.
  • Make links say where they go (for example, "Luncheon registration" rather than "click here").
  • Offer newsletters and flyers as readable text or accessible PDFs where we can, not just pictures of pages.
  • Add captions or transcripts to videos we produce when practical.
  • Check new pages for these points before we publish them.

Tips for easier reading

Make text bigger

Press Ctrl and + on Windows, or Command and + on a Mac. Press Ctrl and 0 (or Command and 0) to return to normal size. On a phone or tablet, spread two fingers apart on the screen.

Have pages read aloud

Most computers, tablets, and phones have a built-in screen reader or "Speak screen" feature. Look in the device's Accessibility settings.

Use the keyboard instead of a mouse

Press Tab to move from one link or button to the next, and Enter to select it.

Known limitations

Our Site runs on WildApricot, a membership platform. Some features, such as the login screen, member directory, event registration, and payment forms, are provided by WildApricot, and we cannot fully change them. WildApricot publishes its own Accessibility Policy.

Some older content, such as past newsletters and scanned documents, may not be fully accessible. Content from outside services (for example, embedded videos or maps) is controlled by those services.

Need help or another format?

If you have trouble using any part of the Site, we will help. We can:

  • Send information by email, in large print, or on paper.
  • Register you for an event or update your membership record for you.
  • Talk it through by phone.

Contact: [Webmaster or Branch Secretary] at [contact email] or [phone], or ask any Branch officer at a monthly luncheon.

Please tell us which page and what went wrong. We aim to respond within [5] business days.
